SPEECH RECOGNITION FOR RADIOLOGY

Comparing real-time, interactive speech recognition to traditional methods in radiology departments, Stephen Herman, MD, noted that report creation time increased from 326 to 379 seconds in one study.  Turnaround time decreased, according to two studies, from 87.8 hours to 43.6 hours, and from 204 hours to less than 5 minutes.  He concluded, "Current speech recognition systems are now viable options for the majority of users, in terms of both accuracy and user-friendliness.  The benefits of improved report turnaround time must be weighed against the increased time radiologists must spend editing reports."     Stephen J. Herman, "Speech Recognition and the Creation of Radiology Reports," in Applied Radiology (May 2004)
