COMMAND! USERS GROUP
COMING, TO AN OFFICE OR BUSINESS NEAR YOU IN FEBRUARY 2005 Palm OS software sound recorder from Audacity Audio, and other accessories for Palm dictation may be integrated with Command!™ workflow manager. Audacity Audio recently added capability to permit transfer of dictation audio file from a Palm Treo Smartphone. According to the company, this is more reliable than dictating on cell phone into telephone server (due to problems with transmission and dropped calls), and faster than recording on cell phone and sending a large, uncompressed file. The company has described benefits of PDA and Audacity software for the medical profession: "In the early years of the PDA (handheld computer), mobile professionals used their Palm PDA's to keep their schedules, contacts, and notes. Before long doctors found their 'Palm' very useful in organizing their reference material. Now doctors have added charge capture, prescription writing, access to patient information, dictation, and many other applications. The new Smartphones add cell phone functionality, email, and internet access. Audacity Audio has a service called AudioMail that lets doctors dictate on their Treo Smartphones and then easily send their dictation files through the cellular network. The PDA / Smartphone enables the doctor to be productive anytime and anywhere.
The new hardware has a fast processor speed, wireless capabilities, a high-resolution screen, and large amounts of memory. Almost any task is possible with the new handheld devices and they are small enough to fit into a pocket. Today nearly half of all doctors use a PDA for at least one task and ninety-nine percent of new doctors are PDA users. Not only is the number of users growing, but the usage per doctor is growing too. The PDA is mobile, cheap, and easier to use than their desktop computers. As the hardware gets better and the application choices grow, there is little reason to carry a separate recorder for dictation. Someday most doctors will dictate on their PDA / Smartphone.
Audacity Audio has developed a broad offering of PDA-based dictation applications. The product, called Audacity, provides easy one-handed operation. Patient scheduling and demographic information can be easily added. Files can be encrypted on the fly for an unequalled level of security. How many digital portables can do that? Sending a file, even to a remote location, is handled automatically during a HotSync. Why would a doctor want to carry a second less-efficient piece of hardware?"
