MICROSOFT AND NUANCE CERTIFICATION

Custom Speech USA is a Microsoft Certified Partner based upon VeriTest evaluation of  Command!™ workflow manager.  The company recently passed the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 (Nuance Communications, Inc.) re-certification exam to qualify as a certified reseller.  Congratulations and thanks to the employees who assisted with the Microsoft and Nuance certifications.

COMMAND!™ CALL CENTER FOR GLUCOSE MONITORING

Command!™ Call Center “basic system” supports telephone dictation, voice mail, and customizable informational announcements and voice prompts. With the optional “Advanced Features Add-On,” Call Center also supports two-way call recording, call transfer (call forwarding), and PhoneCop™ with caller ID, call tracking, and local area network call management, including display of caller ID and personal name or business display of call status on service agent monitor.  Last month, eNews reported on potential use of Command!™ Call Center for a "311" government information hotline (click here).  Effective management of diabetes through computer telephony and telemedicine is currently an active area of research.  Recently, the company provided consultant services for glucose monitoring with telephone keypad entry of blood sugar levels, or with interactive voice response (IVR) with speech recognition.  In one approach, the Command! Call Center may be configured for nonmedical telephonists and a diabetes nurse to support glucose control, patient education, lifestyle changes and medication adherence, and metabolic management, as has been described using other call center software.  Robert J. Young et al., “Pro-Active Call Center Treatment Support (PACCTS) to Improve Glucose Control in Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” Diabetes Care 28: 278-282 (2005)

SPEECHMAX™ AS MT WORKSTATION AND OTHER USES

At its 28th annual convention and exposition in Boston in August, the American Association for Medical Transcription announced that it has changed its name, as of July 26, to Association for Integrity of Healthcare Documentation (AHID).  It is also working on a prototype web-based MT Workstation.  "Its program will allow MTs to have access to physician's databases and will include a help desk that will keep MTs in touch with AAMT professionals.  Some of the features include real-time updates for spellchecker, new vocabulary, an integrated audio player and default word expansion, and full integration with training curriculum."  See L. Himiak, "MTs Celebrate Their Profession and Future At AAMT's Annual Convention and Expo," (August 14, 2006)    Custom Speech USA is not associated with the project, but similar features have been implemented in SpeechMax (U.S. and foreign pats., pats. pending).  The software, however, is "More than a word processor
™."  It also supports dictation, forms creation, speech recognition, translation, text to speech, audio mining, speaker recognition, multimedia presentation, and training session file creation for speech user profile for speech recognition. This training data may be created from segmented, "untranscribed session file" that is transcribed, segment by segment, to create a "transcribed session file" with audio-linked text.  For more information, check SpeechMax product page or the following table.

SPEECH RECOGNITION FOR DICTATION--WINDOWS VISTA

Speech Strategy News reported that Microsoft demonstrated large vocabulary speech recognition that will be part of to-be-released Vista operating system.  The application operates liker other dictation-oriented software.  It will be available in Windows Vista for both dictation and voice commands (voice macros) for U.S. English, U.K. English, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish.  Original demonstration on July 27 had problems with associated background noise.  However, "Microsoft redeemed itself with an impressive demo at SpeechTek in New York in early August.  The dictation demonstrated was perfectly accurate."  B. Meisel, "Microsoft Dictation Software in Vista OS Demonstrated," Speech Strategy News (September 2006).

MTs AS SPEECH RECOGNITION EDITORS--FOLLOW-UP

In another article on change in the medical transcription industry, ADVANCE editors asked different vendors to give their opinion on the current impact of speech recognition.  One company said, "The technology still requires the physician to be part of the transcription process.  Most of our physicians want to dictate on the run and have the transcription arrive in their computers.  The normal ratio is 3-to-1.  Thirty minutes of dictation takes an hour and a half to transcribe.  An hour of a physician's time is much more costly than a transcriptionist's time, and the physician and the patient are better served if the physician is providing patient care.  We feel speech recognition will be used effectively by the transcriptionist to reduce the time involved in the transcription process and reduce cost."  Another claimed, "Speech recognition technology on the back end is a reality.  Again adapting to this change can or cannot effect cost and time efficiencies.  We have tested our senior MTs and found that they can transcribe a job much faster and have a complete product in half the time it takes to have the back-end speech and editing process.  So far it has not impacted turnaround time.  If you use a less experienced MT, perhaps you can get a completed product cheaper.  Still in testing on these issues, will get back to you." T. Cassidy, "Industry Experts Speak Out on Medical Transcription:  Change is the Name of the Game," Advance for Health Information Professionals (August 28, 2006)
