RESTORATION OF NEUROMUSCULAR FUNCTION WITH
IMPLANTABLE CHIP?
Researchers at Johns
Hopkins University (Baltimore) used an analog neural chip to restore a
paralyzed cat's locomotion. The solution may prove implantable in the
not-too-distant future. Physiologically, the coordinated movements of the
limbs are produced by a central pattern
generator (CPG). Sensors and actuators feed signals into spinal cord
neurons and respond to output. Researchers believe that an embedded chip
could reproduce this neural process. S. Bains, "Analog Chip Could Be
Rx for Spinal Cord Injury," EETimes (September 17, 2007) The
research has important implications for locomotion and
potentially other complex neuromuscular activities such as swallowing and
speech.
